Wheels Community Transportation
Wheels Community Transportation was founded in 1976 by the Council on Aging to serve the transportation needs of elderly population of Salem and Keizer. Soon after it's inception, Wheels was asked to include the disabled transportation service needs of the Red Cross as well. In 1983 OHAS agreed to assume administrative and operational responsibility for Wheels.
Wheels operates exclusively within the Urban Growth Boundry of Salem and Keizer. For service in Marion and Polk Counties, see CARTS service on the transportation homepage.
Wheels service is available to those individuals sixty (60) years of age and older, on a "space available" basis. Passengers on Wheels must be able to physically assist themselves on and off the bus. If a passenger is disabled they must have a "mobility aid" (such as a walker or wheel chair) or be accompanied by a personal care attendant (PCA.)
For reservations on Wheels, call 503-585-5187. Reservations are taken between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Rides can be reserved up to 14-days in advance, and as late as the day before the ride is needed. It's best to make your reservation as soon as possible to ensure you get the time and trip you want. At the time the reservation is made, the customer service representative will give the customer an approximate pickup time. We make every effort to arrive within 15-minutes (before or after) of the scheduled pickup time. If the van is expected to be more than 20-minutes late, customer service will notify the customer.
To cancel a Wheels reservation, the rider should notify dispatch at 503-585-5187 as soon as possible, but at least one-hour before their scheduled pickup time. Customers who fail to show up for a scheduled ride three (3) times within a 30-day period will be deemed a "No-Show" and will have their service terminated for two weeks. A written notice will be sent before service is terminated.
